Team USA Recap: Thiem Wins First BMX Freestyle World Cup Gold; August Conquers Czech Tour

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (August 4-18)

ROAD

Czech Tour: Czechia

(August 13-16)AJ August (Netcompany|INEOS) won two of four stages and the overall victory at the Czech Tour, for his first World Tour stage race win. The 20-year-old went into the final day with an 11-second lead over Alessandro Fancellu (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort). The two battled it out on the last stage and sprinted for the finish, with August taking 2nd but maintaining his overall win by 7 seconds. August also won the points and best young rider jerseys. Riley Sheehan (NSN Cycling) won stage one in a sprint finish and captured the yellow leader’s jersey for a day.

Tour de France Femmes: France

(August 1-9) – Four American women completed this year’s Tour de France Femmes, which started in Lausanne, Switzerland and ended in Nice, France.

Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly), Lily Williams (Human Powered Health), Natalie Quinn (Mayenne Monbana My Pie), and Caroline Wreszin (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93) battled it out over nine days, with Faulkner earning the top spot for the Americans, 26th overall. She also had the highest stage result, placing 6th on the Stage 4 time trial.

Vuelta Femenina a Guatemala: Guatemala

(August 13-16)Ashley Frye (Competitive Edge Racing) won the four-day Women’s Tour of Guatemala, which started in Parramos and ended in El Tejar. It was the first UCI stage race win for the 26-year-old, who also won the stage 3 time trial and the Queen of the Mountains jersey.

Mia Aseltine (Competitive Edge Racing) was 5th in the best young rider category. Frye,Galen Bolard (Competitive Edge Racing) and Aseltine placed 2nd, 3rd and 10th in the points category.

Salt Lake Criterium, American Criterium Cup: Salt Lake City, Utah

(August 15-16) – The Salt Lake Criterium in Salt Lake City was the site for stop number 5 of the American Criterium Cup. Two days of criterium racing at altitude for juniors, age-group cyclists, Masters and pros took place over the weekend at the city’s Granary District.

Justin Williams (L39ION of Los Angeles) and Aline Seitz (HigherDOSE/Renova) won the elite men’s and women’s ACC races, which took place on Saturday. 

Preston Eye (Clif Family Drifters Cycling) and Jordan Parra (Foundation Cycling New York) placed 2nd and 3rd behind Williams.

Skylar Schneider (L39ION of Los Angeles) and Marlies Mejias Garcia (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28) placed 2nd and 3rd behind Seitz. 

With his win on Saturday, Williams extended his overall lead in the men’s standings over Lucas Bourgoyne by 42 points. With her second-place finish, Schneider maintained her overall lead in the women’s standings, 26 points ahead of Seitz. 

The final race in the series is Bommarito Audi West County Gateway Cup, September 4-7, in St. Louis, Missouri.

MOUNTAIN BIKE

Life Time Leadville Trail 100 MTB: Leadville, Colorado

(August 15) – After 102 miles of racing, the elite men’s race came down to a two-man sprint, with five-time defending champion Keegan Swenson (Specialized Off-Road) beating New Zealand’s Matthew Wilson (Scott Sports USA/Shimano) to take the win in 5:20:26 at this year’s Leadville Trail 100 MTB.

Marathon MTB national champion Melisa Rollins (Liv Racing Collective) won the elite women’s race in 5:58:43, coming in nearly five minutes ahead of second-place Cecily Decker (PAS Racing), who led for much of the race and battled back from a flat tire toward the end. 

Gravel national champion Bradyn Lange (Canyon x DT Swiss ATR) won the sprint for 3rdover John Gaston (STRAFE-Specialized) in the men’s race. Lange came in 24 seconds behind Swenson and Gaston a second later. Andreas Seewald (Singer KTM Racing) was 5th.  

Lauren Stephens (Aegis x LOE), Sarah Lange (Aegis x LOE) and Hayley Preen (Team Honeycomb 226ers) placed 3rd-5th behind Rollins, who previously won in 2024.

And fresh off his Tour de France showing and back home in Colorado, US road race champion Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) placed 9th, 8:50 behind the elite men’s winner. Back in 2019, an 18-year-old Simmons made his Leadville debut and placed 2nd. This time, he said afterwards, he didn’t have much time to train for the race.

The high-altitude course usually includes 11,000 feet of elevation, but was modified due to wildfires, with several key sections of the traditional route, including the Powerline climb and Sugarloaf Mountain, eliminated. The 102-mile course included 9,916 feet of elevation.

UCI MTB World Cup (Enduro): Haute-Savoie, France

(August 14-16)Jt Fisher (Yeti/FOX Factory Race Team) placed 5th in the elite men’s race, the sixth and final stop on this season’s UCI MTB World Cup Enduro calendar. Fisher competed in the largest field of the weekend, with nearly 140 men battling through eight stages over two days. Fisher finishes the season ranked 7th overall in men’s WC Enduro. 

Romy Williams (Speed Project) placed 2nd in the junior women’s race and finished 2ndoverall in the junior women’s standings for the season.

BMX FREESTYLE

UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup: Birmingham, Alabama

(August 6-9) – Round two of the UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup came to Birmingham, Alabama, and Jacob Thiem earned gold, winning the elite men’s title in front of the home crowd. Results were taken after the semi-finals when weather cancelled the finals.

Marcus Christopher placed 4th and Justin Dowell was 6th. It was the only U.S. stop on the BMX Freestyle World Cup calendar. 

Next stop on the World Cup tour is October 15-18, in Shanghai, China.

USA Cycling Masters & Paracycling Track National Championships: Colorado Springs, Colorado

(August 5-9) – More than 200 athletes vied for national titles over five days of racing at this year’s USA Cycling Masters and Paracycling Track Nationals, held at the Colorado Springs Velodrome. It was a record-breaking event, with 21 new national records and two world records set, and 124 national titles awarded. 

Kimberly Ann Zubris established a new national record and world’s best performance in the Women’s 40-44 3000m Pursuit with her time of 3:46.606. Andrea Villaroman (COS Racing) set a national and world record riding a 1:08.078 in the Women’s 35-39 1000m Time Trial.

GRAVEL

Core4: Iowa City, Iowa

(August 14-15) – core4 served as stop number 9 in the USA Cycling Junior Gravel National Series. Elite, age group and junior athletes took on multi-surface courses of gravel, pavement, dirt, singletrack and remote B roads. Pros tackled a 120-mile course, USAC juniors took on a 60-mile course, while other riders and teams raced on 20, 40, 70 and 120-mile courses.  

Geerike Schreurs (Specialized Off Road) won the elite women’s title, coming across the line alone in 5:49:05. Emily Newsom placed 2nd in 6:07:37. Crystal Anthony (Flow Formulas/Kenda/Black Bibs), Flavia Oliveira Parks (Excel Sports p/b Specialized) and Peta Mullens (Tango Racing) placed 3rd through 5th

Tobias Kongstad (PAS Racing) won the elite men’s race in a tight battle for the finish, coming in at 5:15:34. Cole Davis (SpeedStudio p/b Basso) came in 3 seconds later for 2nd and was the top-placing American, followed a second later by Adam Roberge (Felt UN1TD). Julien Gagne (LunchboxRacing) and Benjamin Perry (Guava x Castelli S.O.G) were 4thand 5th.

Bella Fish (Thaden) won the 15-16 junior women’s race in 4:00:31, beating Zadie Lewandowski (Thaden) by a second. Leni Shelton (Crank Revolution) was 3rd. Roenen King-Ellison (Gravity Collective) won the 15-16 junior men’s race in 2:44:25. Roczen Beissel (Bear Devo) and Axel Brandmeier (Sugar Bottom Bikes) placed 2nd and 3rd

Ruth Knox (Molly Maid-Byron Health and Healing) won the 17-18 junior women’s race in 3:41:26. Sarah Black and Eliana Kostadinov came in 2nd and 3rd. Carter Lembke (Lunchbox Racing) won the 17-18 junior men’s race in 2:33:32. Mason Wilson (Lunchbox Racing) and Jake Mercado (Donovan Racing) placed 2nd and 3rd.

The junior series concludes in La Crescent, Minnesota at the 2026 Gravel National Championships, on September 12.
