Team USA Recap: Four Podium Spots at BMX Freestyle World Cup Opener

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (February 15-28)

BMX FREESTYLE

UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup: Diriyah, Saudi Arabia

(February 15-18) – Americans captured four podium spots at the season’s first UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup, held in Saudi Arabia. Three-time world champion Hannah Roberts led the way with a win in the women’s elite event marking her 8th World Cup win. Perris Benegas landed back on the podium in 3rd.

On the men’s side, Marcus Christopher took 2nd and Brian Fox placed 3rd, marking the first World Cup podium spots for both riders. Kaden Stone took 8th and Justin Dowell rounded things out in 10th.

The next stop for these riders is in Montpellier, France May 17-21 as they target Olympic quota qualifications for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

ROAD

UAE Tour: Saudi Arabia

(February 20-26)Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) placed 5th on GC at the 7-stage UAE Tour. His 4th-place finish on the final summit catapulted Kuss up 12 places on overall GC. Brandon McNulty(UAE Team Emirates), who rode in support of 3rd place finisher Adam Yates, and Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech) were 5th and 6th among Young Riders.

Tour Alpes Maritimes du Var: France

(February 17-19)Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) took 3rd overall in this 3-stage race in southeast France. Powless placed 2nd on stages 1 and 2 and was 4th in the points category.

La Drome Classic: France

(February 26) Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo) placed 5th at La Drome Classic, a hilly and windy 191 kilometer race held in southeast France. Simmons was part of a chase group that sprinted at the end for the top spots.

TRACK

2023 Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup: Jakarta, Indonesia

(February 23-26) – Round one of the three-round Nations Cup track series took place over three days at the Jakarta International Velodrome, in Indonesia. The team of Colleen Gulick and Lily Williams took 8th in Women’s Madison, while the team of Gulick, Williams, Bethany Matsick and Shayna Powless placed 9th in Team Pursuit.

Results from the series count toward Olympic quota rankings to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Round 2 takes place March 14-17 in Cairo, Egypt.

2023 UCI Cycling Esport World Championships: Zwift

(February 18) – 18 athletes represented USA Cycling at the Esport World Championships on Zwift. The new format of three elimination style events led to an exciting competition. Four Americans, Jacqueline Godbe, Arielle Martin-Verhaaren, Liz Van Houweling, and Kristen Kulchinsky, made it into the final round of 10 with Godbe taking bronze. In the men’s race, Zach Nehr placed 10th as the lone male making it to the final round.
