Team USA Recap: Marcus Christopher First BMX Freestyle World Cup Victory; Blevins 4-for-4 in Short Track World Cup; McNulty Top-10 at Giro

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (May 27-June 10)

BMX FREESTYLE
UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup: Montpellier, France

(May 28-June 1) The first major competition for the BMX team kicked off with the 2025 UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup in Montpellier, where riders battled intense heat all week. The men’s field began with 58 riders, narrowing down to 24 for the semifinals and just 12 for the final round. Team USA showed its strength, placing four riders into Saturday’s final.

Marcus Christopher was the one to watch after topping both qualifying and semifinals. He delivered a nearly flawless run in the final to earn the highest score of the weekend and capture his first World Cup victory. Justin Dowell finished 4th, Nick Bruce placed 6th, and Bryce Tryon took 12th.

On the women’s side, Olympic silver medalists Hannah Roberts and Perris Benegas both advanced to the final, finishing third and tenth, respectively. Roberts’ podium marked the 16th World Cup podium of her career.

MOUNTAIN BIKE
UCI MTB World Cup (DH): Loudenvielle, France

(May 30-June 1) Bode Burke (Commencal Schwalbe by Les Orres) won the junior men’s final at Round 2 of World Cup downhill racing in Loudenvielle, France, marking another impressive weekend for American DH. Asa Vermette (Frameworks Factory Racing/5DEV) placed 5th.

Matilda Melton (Commencal Schwalbe by Les Orres) placed 3rd in the junior women’s final, scoring her first World Cup podium. 

Luca Shaw (Canyon Collective Factory Team) was 5th and Ryan Pinkerton (Mondraker Factory Racing) 6th in the elite men’s final, while Anna Newkirk (Frameworks Racing/5DEV) placed 5th in the elite women’s final.

UCI MTB World Cup (XCO, XCC, DH ): Leogang, Austria

(June 5-8) Round 4 of World Cup XCO/XCC racing and round 3 of DH took place in super-challenging, muddy conditions in Austria. Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) won his fourth XCC World Cup of the season, the first rider ever to achieve that streak. Vida Lopez de San Roman (Trinity Racing) took 2nd in U23 women’s XCC.

Anna Newkirk (Frameworks Racing/5DEV) continued her streak of top placings, earning 2nd in the DH elite women’s final. Aletha Ostgaard (Canyon Collective Factory Team) was 2nd in the junior women’s final and Asa Vermette (Frameworks Factory Racing/5DEV) placed 3rd in junior men’s.

ROAD

Giro d’Italia: Italy

(May 9-June 1) – After three weeks of racing that started in Albania and ended in Rome, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) placed 9th overall at this year’s Giro d’Italia. Riding in support of UAE’s team leaders, including 2nd-place Isaac del Toro, McNulty’s highlights included two top-10 stage finishes: 8th on the Stage 2 time trial, and 5th on Stage 19’s brutal mountain course. This was the 27-year-old’s best result at the Giro. He previously placed 15th (2020) and 29th (2023).

Tour of Britain Women: Great Britain

(June 5-8)Megan Jastrab (Team Picnic PostNL) placed 7th overall at this year’s Tour of Britain Women, a four-day race that started in North Yorkshire and ended in Glasgow. The 23-year-old also captured two top-10 stage finishes.

Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly) wore the leader’s jersey for a day and placed 3rd in mountain and 4th in the points categories, while finishing 16th overall.

Antwerp Port Epic Ladies: Belgium

(June 7)Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) placed 8th at the one-day, 125 kilometer Antwerp Port Epic race. It was the first of three Belgian races in one week for Williams.

Dwars door de Westhoek: Belgium

(June 8)Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) placed 4th at Dwars door de Westhoek, a 127 kilometer UCI women’s race that finished in a six-person sprint for the line.

USA Cycling Criterium National Series, St. Francis Tulsa Tough: Tulsa, OK

(June 6) – Stop number one in the six-race USA Cycling Criterium National Series

came to Tulsa for the annual St. Francis Tulsa Tough. Kendall Ryan (L39ION of Los Angeles) won the women’s pro race, while Moritz Augenstein (DCC) took the men’s win.

Skylar Schneider (Miami Blazers) was 2nd in the women’s race and Paola Munoz (Goldman EFT Racing) placed 3rd. In the pro men’s race, Alec Cowan (L39ION of Los Angeles) placed 2nd andMichael Garrison (MGR p/b NICH SpeedClub) was 3rd

Next up in the series: LHM/CC Utah Crits, on June 14 in Salt Lake City.

GRAVEL
Lifetime Unbound Gravel and Junior Gravel National Series: Emporia, Kansas

(May 28-31) – It was a full weekend of racing and fun for nearly 4,000 age-group and elite cyclists at Unbound Gravel, which featured 25, 50, 100, 200, and 350-mile courses, and marked the second event in the Lifetime Grand Prix Series.

Canadian Robert Britton (Factor Bikes) took first in the 350 mile XL course, completing it in 17:49:51, while American and 7-time Ironman champion Heather Jackson (Herbalife-Canyon) was the top female finisher at 20:57:57, both setting course records.

New Zealand’s Cameron Jones (Scott-Shimano) won the elite men’s 200-mile race and set a new course record (8:37:09) while Poland’s Karolina Migoń (PAS Racing) took the elite woman’s crown in 10:03:54. 

Unbound was also the third stop of the 2025 USA Cycling Junior Gravel National Series for cyclists ages 15-18. Juniors raced the 50-mile course for a chance to earn an invitation to a National Team Road Camp at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center.
