Team USA Recap: Paracycling Finishes Road World Cups with 44 Medals and Four Overall Titles; Mountain Bike Squad Opens World Cup Season with Three Wins

UCI Paracycling Road World Cup: Gistel, Belgium

(April 28-May 1) – Team USA earned 13 medals over four days of time trial and road racing at Round 2 of the Paracycling World Cup, held in Gistel, Belgium.

UCI Paracycling Road World Cup: Abruzzo, Italy

(May 7-10) – Team USA earned 13 medals over four days of racing at Round 3 of the Paracycling World Cup, held in Abruzzo, Italy. This also marked the last World Cup of the year with Team USA winning four World Cup Overall titles.

Tour de Bretagne: France

(April 25-May 1)Gavin Hlady (EF Education-Aevolo) placed 6th at this year’s Tour de Bretagne, a week-long stage race in France. It’s the best UCI race result in his pro career for the current U23 Road national champion, who competes on EF Pro Cycling’s development team.

Grand Prix West Bohemia: Czechia

(May 2-3)Enzo Hincapie (grenke-Auto Eder) placed 6th and Jack Klau was 9th at the two-day UCI Junior GP West Bohemia. Klau also placed 1st in the Youth category. 

Klau is one of six junior riders who are training and competing in Europe as part of Team USA’s junior development program. The roster also includes: Preston Ronck, Damiano Rivera, Park Bishop, Mason Wilson and Cormac Nagle. Next up for the squad is Course de la Paix Juniors (Junior Peace Race), May 7-10, Terezin, Czechia.

Tour of the Gila, UCI Stage Race: Silver City, New Mexico

(April 29-May 3) – Elite men and women took on a time trial, three road races and a criterium at the annual Tour of the Gila, the only UCI-sanctioned stage race in the U.S. More than 30 teams, including a dozen international teams, competed over the five-day race. Amateur racers took on three and four-day stage races.

Lauren Stephens (Aegis x Leaders of Enchantment) earned the elite women’s overall victory for the third year in a row, and Kieran Haug (Modern Adventure Pro Cycling) was the top-placing American on the elite men’s side, coming in 24 seconds behind Brazil’s Henrique Avancini, for second place. Colombian riders Diego Camargo, Samuel Florez and Robinson Lopez placed 3rd-5th on the pro men’s side. 

Stephens placed first in two stages and top-five in three. Ashley Frye (Competitive Edge Racing) was 2nd overall, followed by Emmi Gilbert (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28), Kylee Hanel (Aegis Cycling Mixed Team) and Kira Payer (Speedblock p/b Terun) in 3rd-5th

Golden State Race Series: Sacramento, California

(May 1-3) – Stop number six of USA Cycling’s Junior Road National Series took place over a weekend of racing at the Golden State Race Series in Sacramento. 

After three days of racing, Ivan Linser (CycleSport.com) won the Men’s overall title and Jordyn Cooper (Dirt Camp Racing) won the Women’s overall title. 

Reid Peifer (Bear National Team) and Stella Cafiso (East Portland Youth Cycling) won the Junior 15-16 Men’s and Women’s Omnium titles. 

Ben Windrem (Sycip/Devout Coffee) and Sophia Wellmeier (Team California) earned the 17-18 Men’s and Women’s Omnium titles. 

The Junior Road National Series allows riders to earn series points and be considered for USA Cycling development opportunities. Next event in the series is the Tour of North Georgia, May 29-31.

USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships: Madison, Wisconsin

(May 7-10) – Madison, Wisconsin welcomed this year’s Collegiate Road National Championships, presented by Trek, brought the nation’s top collegiate cyclists to Waterloo, Wisconsin, for an exciting weekend of Team Time Trial, Road Race, and Criterium competition. 

Riders battled for national titles and omnium honors across Varsity and Club divisions, with standout performances from schools Colorado Mesa University and the University of Colorado Boulder. Individual stars like Emily Gilbert (University of Arizona), Ella Sabo (Colorado Mesa University), Preston Eye (Piedmont University), and Andrew Carr (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) delivered impressive multi-day performances to win the Collegiate Omnium National Titles.

UCI MTB World Cup (XCC, XCO, DH): South Korea

(May 1-3) – Team USA kicked off their World Cup MTB season with a stunning weekend of firsts in South Korea, earning three gold medals, two bronze, along with seven top-10 placings, all in muddy, challenging conditions.

Makena Kellerman earned gold in U23 Women’s Short Track, for her first-ever U23 World Cup podium. 

Making his Elite Men’s debut, 19-year-old Asa Vermette (Frameworks Racing/TRP) won gold in DH. He also posted the fastest time in DH qualifiers. 

Aletha Ostgaard (Canyon DH Racing) won the Junior Women’s DH while also posting the fastest time of any woman, including the elite woman’s winner.

Madigan Munro (Liv Factory Racing) earned bronze in Elite Women’s XCO for her first elite WC podium, while Bailey Cioppa won bronze in U23 Women’s XCO, her first WC podium as well.

Makena Kellerman was 8th in U23 XCO. Haley Batten (Specialized Factory Racing) placed 9th  in Elite Women’s XCO. Daniel English (Trinity Racing) was 6th and Jack Spranger 8thin U23 Men’s XCO.  

Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek-Unbroken) placed 6th in Elite Women’s Short Track, and Riley Amos (Trek-Unbroken) placed 10th in Elite Men’s Short Track.

Ryan Pinkerton (Mondraker Factory Racing) was 8th in Elite Men’s DH.

While it was a hugely successful weekend, Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing), the reigning World Cup XCC and XCO champion, broke his collarbone during training and had to withdraw from competition.

The Showdown at Angler’s Ridge and UCI XCO Junior Series: Danville, Virginia

(May 1-3) – Stop number four of the Cross-Country MTB National Series and round 2 of the UCI XCO Junior Series took place over three days of racing in Danville.

Ingrid McElroy won the Elite Women’s XCC and XCO races. Emma Langley placed 4th in XCC and 6th in XCO and was the highest-placed American behind McElroy in both races.

Sandy Floren placed 2nd and Colin O’Neil 3rd in Elite Men’s XCC behind Canadian Alexander Woodford. Canadian Owen Clark took first in Elite Men’s XCO, followed by Americans Carson Beckett and Sandy Floren in 2nd and 3rd

Anabel Miller and Tatum Dalton were 2nd and 3rd in U23 Women’s XCO, behind Canadian Madeleine Pollock. Ethan Blocker and Kevin Vereecke took 2nd and 3rd in U23 XCO behind South African Omar Wilson

In the Junior Women’s XCO, American women swept the top five spots. Aida Linton took 1stby 9 seconds, followed by Zanna Logar, Lily Agnew, Raina Logar, and Ada Watson in 2nd-5th

In the Junior Men’s XCO, Noah Scholnick was the top-placing American, coming in 8 seconds behind the winner, Canadian Emilien Belzile. Americans Kian Reid and Rylan Zacharek placed 3rd and 5th. There were 94 cyclists in the race, making it by far the biggest field of the day.

Englewood Open p/b Trek: Fall River, Wisconsin

(May 8-10) – Stop number five of the Cross-Country MTB National Series went to Fall River, Wisconsin.

In the Elite Men’s XCO, the Canadians led the charge with Logan Sadesky and Owen Clark taking the top two spots, with American Austin Beard scoring bronze. In the Elite Women’s XCO, the Puerto Ricans swept the top two spots with Suheily Rodríguez Cruz and Coral Ramírez, while American Emma Schwab finished third.

In the U23 races, Ingrid McElroy and Greta Kilburn finished first and third, respectively.

The Americans dominated the junior races as well. In the Junior Women’s race, Katja Opfertook the win, followed by Payette Spangenberg in second and Aleah Heiland in third. In the Junior Men’s race, Thomas Agnew claimed victory, with Rylan Zacharek finishing second.

The next stop in the series is the US Pro Cup p/b Washougal MTB, June 5-6, in Washougal, Washington.

Mountain Creek Pro Downhill Series: Vernon, New Jersey

(May 8-10)   Kailey Skelton (Ari Factory Racing) won the elite women’s race and   Nate Kitchen (Intense Factory Racing) won the elite men’s race at the second stop of the USA Cycling Downhill National Series.

The rain came in just for finals day making it an extremely technical race run with many of the top riders crashing out, but Skelton and Kitchen stayed up right throwing down fast runs from start to finish.

Stop number three in the Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series is at Solitude Mountain, Utah, July 15-19.

USA BMX Legacy Nationals: Tulsa, Oklahoma

(May 1-3) – The third stop of the USA BMX Pro Series calendar took place at Legacy Nationals, held at Tulsa’s Hardesty National BMX Stadium, headquarters to USA BMX.

Payton Ridenour (Chase/BRGStore.com/Tioga) and Drew Polk (Factory Syndyt/LSG) won Friday’s elite women’s and men’s races.

Ava Corley (Factory Rift/Tangent), Derin Merten (RaceInc/Seven/Box), McKenzie Gayheart (Factory Syndyt/Fly Racing) and Preslie Gould (Factory/Answer) were 2nd-5thbehind Ridenour.

On the elite men’s side, Kamren Larsen (Factory/Answer), Romain Mahieu, Anthony Bucardo (Biolab-Syndyt) and Jye Furner placed 2nd-5th.

Alexis Alden (Albe’s/Zeronine/Box) won the U23 Women’s race and Sean Day (Cycle Therapy) won the U23 Men’s. Evan Esposito (Factory/Albe’s/Zeronine/Box) won the junior men’s final. 

Australian Saya Sakakibara won Saturday’s pro women’s race, followed by Molly Simpson(Daylight/Hero), Payton Ridenour, Lauren Reynolds (Factory/Answer) and Derin Mertenin 2nd-5th.

Australian Izaac Kennedy (Chase/BRGstore.com/Tioga) took the men’s pro win, followed by Joris Daudet (Kenny Racing/Shimano/Schwalbe), Sylvain Andrew, Cameron Wood (USA BMX Foundation) and Drew Polk

Music City Nationals is next up on the USA BMX Pro Schedule, May 22-24, in Nashville.
