Team USA Recap: Blevins dominates MTB World Cups in Brazil; Barry 2nd at Junior Paris-Roubaix, Dygert 8th at Paris-Roubaix Femmes

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (April 1-15)

ROAD

Paris-Roubaix Femmes: France

(April 12) Chloé Dygert (Canyon/SRAM zondacrypto) placed 8th overall at Paris-Roubaix Femmes, the 148 kilometer version of the fabled “Hell of the North.” Dygert was with the final small group of women battling for podium spots behind the solo winner, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike).

Paris-Roubaix Juniors: France

(April 13) – Racing for the USA Cycling National Team, Ashlin Barry placed 2nd at the junior men’s version of Paris-Roubaix, which covered 110 kilometers of the cobbled course. He was in a final chase group of 15 vying for 2nd and 3rd place behind winner Michiel Mouris (Team GRENKE -Auto Eder). Barry, age 17, is the reigning junior road race and time trial national champion and crossed the line in Roubaix wearing his Stars-and-Stripes jersey.

UCI MTB World Series: Araxá-Minas Gerais, Brazil

(April 3-6) On the first of two weekends of XCC and XCO racing in Brazil, Christopher Blevins(Specialized Factory Racing) got the XCC victory on day one and placed 2nd the next day in XCO, coming in just behind teammate Victor Koretzky.

Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) grabbed bronze in a sprint to the finish in the elite women’s XCO race, while Kelsey Urban (KMC Ridley MTB Racing Team) placed 10th.

Brayden Johnson nabbed silver in the U23 men’s short track for his first World Cup podium, while the U23 women earned their best World Cup XCO results, with Makena Kellerman (Bear National Team) placing 8th and Bailey Cioppa (Bear National Team) placing 15th.

UCI MTB World Series: Araxá-Minas Gerais, Brazil

(April 10-12) In round 2 of XCO and XCC racing for elite and U23 cyclists, Christopher Blevins(Specialized Factory Racing) swept the weekend, taking first in the elite men’s XCO and XCC races. 

Kelsey Urban (KMC Ridley MTB Racing Team), Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing – Pirelli), and Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) all placed in the top 15 in elite women’s XCO, while Riley Amos (Trek Factory Racing – Pirelli) fought to a top-15 spot after crashing out the previous weekend.

Brayden Johnson earned 4th in the U23 men’s short track, while Bailey Cioppa (Bear National Team) and Daniel English (Trinity Racing) had their best U23 World Cup results, finishing 9th in their respective XCO races.

Showdown at Angler’s Ridge: Danville, Virginia

(April 11-12) Stop number three in the eight-race USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Series came to Danville, Virginia, the Showdown at Angler’s Ridge.

Tyler Orschel (Pan-American Union Racing) took first in elite men’s XCC, followed by Devon Feehan(Dirt Camp Racing) and Robbie Day (Bear National Team) in 2nd and 3rd

Alice Hoskins (The Gravity Academy) took 1st on the elite women’s side, followed by Ada Watson(First Flight Devo) and Nicole Bradbury (Hockley Valley Resort ARMADA) in 2nd and 3rd.

In elite men’s XCO, Tyler Orschel (Pan-American Union Racing) claimed another victory, followed by Devon Feehan (Dirt Camp Racing) and Toby Hassett (Bear National Team) in 2nd and 3rd

Alice Hoskins (The Gravity Academy) was also a repeat winner, taking 1st in elite women’s XCO, followed by Nicole Bradbury (Hockley Valley Resort ARMADA) and Ayana Gagne (Siboire-Quiroule-Trek) in 2nd and 3rd

In the UCI XCO Junior Series (ages 17-18 men), Maddex Thiel (Texas Devo) placed 1st, followed by Myles Perry (Rouleur Devo/Specialized) and George Frazier (Donovan Racing) in 2nd and 3rd.

In the UCI XCO Junior Series (ages 17-18 women), Ada Watson (First Flight Devo) took 1st, followed by Zanna Logar (Gravity Collective) and Isabella Cardozo (Freefly Elite Endurance) in 2nd and 3rd

Next stop in the series is May 4, the Englewood Open p/b Trek and UCI XCO Junior Series, in Fall River, Wisconsin.

USA Cycling Downhill National Series: Zirconia, North Carolina

(April 3-6) Round one of the USA Cycling Downhill National Series came to Ride Rock Creek in Zirconia, NC. The series features five rounds of racing for pros and age-group athletes.

The Americans swept the elite categories with the next generation of racers claiming the top steps. 16-year-old Aletha Ostgaard (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Team) took her second big win this spring after taking a dominant win at the Tennessee National the weekend prior. Anna Newkirk (Frameworks Racing/5DEV) finished 2nd and Kailey Skelton (Ari Factory Racing) placing 3rd

18-year-old Asa Vermette (Frameworks Racing/5DEV) took 1st, followed by Luca Shaw (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Team), Ryan Pinkerton (Mondraker Factory Racing), Tyler Waite (Yeti/Fox Factory Race Team) and Aaron Gwin (Gwin Racing) rounding out the rest of the podim.

Next up in the series is Mountain Creek Bike Park, May 8-11, in Vernon, New Jersey.

Pan American Track Continental Championships: Asuncion, Paraguay

(April 1-6) – Team USA dominated the Pan Am Track continental championships, bringing home 8 gold, three silver and two bronze medals. 

Gold medalists: Peter Moore (elite men’s Omnium); Brendan Rhim (elite men’s Elimination Race); Anders Johnson (elite men’s Individual Pursuit); Emily Ehrlich (elite women’s Individual Pursuit); Emily Hayes, Kayla Hankins, Hayley Yoslov (elite women’s Team Sprint); Peter Moore, Brendan Rhim, Anders Johnson, David Domonoske (elite men’s Team Pursuit); Bethany Ingram, Olivia Cummins, Reagen Pattishall, Emily Ehrlich (elite women’s Team Pursuit); Peter Moore andBrendan Rhim (elite men’s Madison)

Silver medalists: Brendan Rhim (elite men’s Scratch); Bethany Ingram and Olivia Cummins (elite women’s Madison); Hayley Yoslov (elite women’s Time Trial)

Bronze medalists: Bethany Ingram (elite women’s Omnium); Emily Hayes (elite women’s Sprint)

In addition, Peter Moore placed 4th and Olivia Cummins placed 5th in their respective men’s and women’s Points Race, David Domonoske placed 5th in elite men’s Time Trial, and McKenna McKeeplaced 5th in elite women’s Time Trial.

Pan American BMX Racing Championships: Chillan, Chile

(April 5) – Eight of Team USA’s top U23 and Junior athletes traveled to Chillan, Chile to compete in the 2025 Pan American Championships. The roster included:  

U23 men: James Cutter Williams (Tangent/ Rift/ Rockstar Racing Team), Ethan Popovich (Huffy Bicycles) 

U23 women: Keiley Shea (316 Racing), Jacy Moore (Chase Bicycles / BMX Racing Group) 

Junior men: Sean Day (Factory Full Tilt/ Radio), Evan Esposito (Albe’s Bike Shop) 

Junior women: Savanna Stokes (Mongoose Bikes), Alexis Alden (Albe’s Bike Shop)

They brought home two medals and several top-10 placings. Alexis Alden earned gold in the junior women’s final, while Keiley Shea placed 3rd in the U23 women’s final. Evan Esposito and Sean Dayplaced 5th and 6th in the junior men’s final, and Savanna Stokes was 7th in the junior women’s final. Jacy Moore placed 5th in the U23 women’s final.

Copa Latinoamericana: Chillan, Chile

(April 6) – On a second day of BMX racing in Chile, Payton Ridenour placed 1st in the elite women’s final and Alexis Alden took 1st in the junior women’s final. It was Alden’s second podium spot in two days, capturing silver the day before.

Keiley Shea took bronze for the second day in a row in the U23 women’s race, while Jacy Mooreplaced 7th

Lifetime Sea Otter Classic Gravel and Gravel National Series: Monterey, California

(April 10-13) –  Keegan Swenson (Santa Cruz) won the pro men’s gravel race and Haley Batten(Specialized Factory Racing) earned the women’s crown at this year’s Sea Otter, the first year that the series kicked off with a gravel race instead of a mountain bike race. The pros traversed three laps with about 3,500 feet of climbing each, for a total of 90 miles.

It was the first stop in the six-race Lifetime Grand Prix, which features more than $200,000 in prize money for top-placing pro men and women. Swenson is the three-time defending champion in the overall series on the men’s side, while Batten is a silver medalist in Olympic mountain biking who was doing her first gravel race.

The men’s race was tight, with Matthew Beers (Specialized Off Road) coming in 9 seconds behind Swenson for 2nd, and Alexey Vermeulen in 3rd. Batten had a solid five-minute lead over 2nd-placed Sofia Gomez Villafane (Specialized Off Road), who won last year’s series, and Cecily Decker (PAS Racing) was 3rd

Sea Otter was also the second stop of the 2025 USA Cycling Junior Gravel National Series for cyclists ages 15-18. Juniors raced two, 30-mile laps with 7,000 feet of climbing. The series offers a chance to earn an invitation to the USA Cycling National Team Road Camp later this year.
