Team USA Recap: Jorgenson Top-10 at Tour de France; Riley and Urban Win Elite MTB National Titles

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (June 25-July 9)

MOUNTAIN BIKE

Cross-Country MTB National Championships: Bear Creek Mountain Resort, Macungie, PA

(July 17-21) – Hundreds of age-group and elite mountain bikers gathered at Bear Creek Mountain Resort to vie for Stars and Stripes jerseys in XCO and Short Track. This was the fourth time and second year in a row that Bear Creek has hosted the national championships.

Bjorn Riley (Trek Future Racing) and Kelsey Urban (Bear National Team) swept both titles in the elite men’s and women’s races, winning XCO and Short Track national championships respectively.

In elite men’s XCO, Robbie Day (Bear National Team) earned the silver medal and Devon Feehan (Chenango Point Cycles) took bronze. Kate Courtney (Bear National Team) earned silver for the 2nd year in a row and Gwendalyn Gibson (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) got the bronze.

Carson Hampton (Bear National Team) earned the U23 men’s XCO and Short Track titles, while Madigan Munro (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) defended her national champion title in XCO, crossing the line well ahead of second place. Sofia Waite (WE Development) earned the U23 women’s Short Track title.

Nicholas Konecny (Bear National Team) defended his national title in the junior men’s XCO race, while Vida Lopez de San Roman (Bear National Team) also doubled down, winning the XCO and Short Track titles for junior women. Oliver Welcker (Bear National) won the junior men’s Short Track title.

Tour de France: Italy/France

(June 29-July 21)Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) was the top-placing American at this year’s Tour de France, finishing 8th overall, 3rd in the Youth category and 4th in King of the Mountains. It was the best-ever Tour finish for Jorgenson, who rode in support of second-place finisher Jonas Vingegaard.

Of the 176 riders who started the race, 141 finished including all three Americans: Jorgenson, US Pro Road Champion and first-time Tour rider Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost), and teammate Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), who competed in his fifth Tour.

Women’s Giro d’Italia: Italy

(July 7-14)Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) placed 2nd on the final stage of the women’s Tour of Italy, which wrapped up on Sunday in L’Aquila. She also placed 2nd on Stage 6 and had two top-10 finishes on stages 1 and 2, for 30th place on GC. This season marks the 31-year-old’s return to the women’s pro tour after a two-year sabbatical spent gravel racing.

American Criterium Cup: IU Health Momentum Indy, Indianapolis

(July 12) – Race number five in The American Criterium Cup (ACC) series took place in Indianapolis, with Marlies Mejias Garcia (Virginia’s Blue Ridge Twenty24) placing 1stin the elite women’s race for the second year in a row, and Alfredo Rodriguez (REIGN Storm Racing) capturing first on the men’s side.

Paola Munoz (Team Goldman Sachs/ETFS Racing) was 2nd, and overall ACC series leader Skylar Schneider (Miami Blazers) took 3rd. Jordan Parra (REIGN Storm Racing) placed 2nd and Ben Oliver (Above and Beyond Cancer Cycling Team p/b Bike World) was 3rd.

Through five races of the eight-race series, Skylar Schneider leads the women in the points competition, followed by Rylee McMullen and Makayla Macpherson. Jordan Parra leads the men, followed by his teammates Alfredo Rodriguez and Danny Summerhill. Next up in the series: Chicago Grit, July 27, in Lake Bluff, Illinois.

Elite and Para-Cycling Track National Championships: Carson, California

(July 10-14) – Dozens of national titles in individual and team events were awarded over four days of racing at the 2024 Elite and Para-Cycling Track National Championships, held at Velo Sports Center in Carson, California.

Kimberly Zubris (Bike Works p/b Fred Beans) won the elite women’s Omnium, followed by Chloe Patrick (Cynisca Cycling) and

Colleen Gulick (Team Skyline - Cadence).

Brendan Rhim (Project Echelon Racing) captured the elite men’s Omnium title, followed by Anders Johnson (Chaney Windows and Doors) and Colby Lange (Chaney Windows and Doors).

The elite women’s Team Pursuit title was won by Chloe Patrick (Cynisca Cycling), Hayley Bates (Champion Factory), Morgan James (Velo Club La Grange) and Colleen Gulick (Team Skyline - Cadence).

Anders Johnson (Chaney Windows and Doors), Lance Abshire (Chaney Windows and Doors), David Domonoske (Alto Velo) and Spencer Seggebruch (Chaney Windows and Doors) won the men’s title.
